Start with the current Idaho source
Idaho Fish and Game’s September 17, 2026 guidance describes restrictions on certain technologies for hunting and scouting between August 30 and December 31, 2026. It lists retrieving wounded game among the exceptions. That exception is not blanket permission to scout or hunt with a drone.

Keep three questions separate
An answer to one question does not settle the others. For a particular hunt or recovery situation, get clarification from the responsible agency before proceeding.
- Wildlife rules: check the current Idaho Fish and Game guidance for the species and circumstances.
- Aviation rules: check the applicable FAA requirements and the specific airspace.
- Land access: confirm the relevant landowner or land-manager permissions for the search and retrieval.
Commercial drone operations have their own requirements
The FAA’s commercial-operator guidance explains the Part 107 pathway and links to information on airspace authorizations and waivers. Use that source for aviation requirements rather than treating a wildlife-rule exception as permission for a particular flight.

Check the date and jurisdiction
This guide was published on October 16, 2026. The September guidance refers to specific 2026 dates; do not carry those dates or another state’s rules into a later season without checking the current source. Public, private and tribal land can involve different authorities.
